Seven months into the COVID-19 global pandemic, with closures and restrictions all around us, the Port of New York and New Jersey remains open and fully operational. Container volumes have rebounded sharply, consistent with the elimination of most “blank sailings.” In August, the Port returned to 2019 levels, setting a new all-time monthly container record, including a new record for intermodal rail volume. At almost 65,000 lifts, the port-wide intermodal ExpressRail system handled 7.8 percent more volume than August 2019, with overall rail volume up 1.4 percent year-to-date through August 2020.     Following the Golden Week celebration (October 1-8), just two blank sailings remain on Transpacific services calling on the Port of New York and New Jersey. Volumes at the Port of New York and New Jersey rose across the board in July compared to the previous month. The effects of COVID-19 impacted June’s total volume numbers, but July’s total volume increased to 607,463 TEUs (342,124 lifts) compared to 511,306 TEUs (290,454 lifts) in June. July’s total volume numbers show an 8.4 percent decrease compared to July 2019, which had 662,994 TEUs (376,135 lifts). The worldwide pandemic impacted June’s total volume numbers at the Port of New York and New Jersey. In June, the Port had 511,306 TEUs (290,454 lifts) compared to 611,027 TEUs (347,294 lifts) in June 2019, a 16.3 percent decrease in total volume. Cargo volume at the Port of New York and New Jersey declined in May, a result linked to the global pandemic. Total volume for May 2020 was 537,412 TEUs (304,132 lifts) versus 643,706 TEUs (366,366 lifts) in May 2019, a 16.5 percent decrease. For the month of April, the Port of New York and New Jersey’s rail business continues to demonstrate growth as the total rail volume, January through April, is 6.0 percent greater than in the same period in 2019.
