Total Volume Rises Again in October at the Port of NY and NJ

Total volume at the Port of New York and New Jersey rose by 13.4 percent in October, posting 755,437 TEUs (419,744 containers) versus 666,381 TEUs (374,805 containers) in October 2019. This increase brings our year through October total to 6,137,859 TEUs (3,452,130 containers).

October imports totaled 405,415 TEUs (224,835 containers) compared to 340,952 TEUs (191,655 containers) in October 2019, an 18.9 percent increase. From January through October 2020, imports at the Port of New York and New Jersey reached 3,198,861 TEUs (1,788,425 containers) versus 3,195,511 TEUs (1,804,364 containers) in the same period of 2019, a 0.1 percent increase.

Exports in October at the Port totaled 350,022 TEUs (194,455 containers) versus 325,429 TEUs (182,855 containers) in October 2019, a 7.6 percent increase in TEU volume. From January through October 2020, exports reached 2,938,998 TEUs (1,651,568 containers) versus 3,091,251 TEUs (1,753,719 containers) in the same period of 2019, a 4.9 percent decrease.

Rail volume increased by 13.8 percent from the previous year’s October figure, totaling 65,677 containers for October 2020. From January through October 2020, rail volume is 4.5 percent greater than in the same period of 2019.

In October, 54,077 autos moved through the Port, an increase of 17.1 percent compared to October 2019.
