On Monday, February 05, 2018, the Port of New York and New Jersey announced that cargo volumes for 2017 had shattered the existing annual cargo volume record set in 2015 by 5.3 percent. Specifically, during 2017, the port handled 6,710,817 TEUs compared to 6,371,720 TEUs handled in 2015. Cargo tallies continued their growth trend at the Port of New York and New Jersey in November. Year-to-date over 2016, November 2017 showed a 7.7 overall growth for the port in terms of TEUs handled (6,166,851 over 5,723,821). This growth broke down to: a 6.3 percent increase in import TEU loads (3,122,103 over 2,937,980); a 4 percent increase in export TEUs loads (1,294,229 over 1,244,555); and a 5.6 percent increase in total TEU loads (4,416,332 over 4,182,535). August 2017 became the best month for cargo volumes in the long and busy history of the Port of New York and New Jersey. The monthly total of 361,565 lifts (631,404 TEUs) crushed the previous monthly high of 339, 601 lifts (588,918 TEUs) logged in July 2015. August 2017 also fared 7.8% better than the previous  year’s volumes (August 2016). At close of August 2017, the port beat 2016 overall lifts by 6.2%. The Port Authority announced today that cargo volumes in the Port of New York and New Jersey are on record pace for 2017. The first six months of this year were 4.4 percent higher than the same period in 2015, when the previous record of 3,093,789 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) was established. Between January and June this year, the port handled 3,229,675 TEUs, compared to 3,041,287 TEUs handled in 2016.
