Following two months of steady growth, total volume returned to the status quo in July at the Port of New York and New Jersey. A total of 766,276 TEUs (418,294 containers) moved through the Port, a modest 3.5% drop from the 794,268 TEUs (437,248 containers) recorded in July 2025. This number brings our year-through-July total to 5,193,435 TEUs (2,842,638 containers). 

By The Numbers

Imports for July totaled 392,074 TEUs (213,766 containers) versus 420,131 TEUs (231,622 containers) in July 2025, a 6.7% decrease. From January through July, the Port of New York and New Jersey imported 2,621,521 TEUs (1,440,016 containers), a 1.2% decrease from the 2,653,528 TEUs (1,466,357 containers) imported in the same period of the previous year.  

Exports decreased 8.1% in July compared to July 2025, totaling 112,084 TEUs (60,109 containers) and 121,999 TEUs (65,476 containers). From January through July, exported loads reached 823,611 TEUs (440,136 containers), a 1.3% decrease from the previous year’s 834,564 TEUs (447,206 containers).

Export empties increased 3.4% in July, totaling 259,496 TEUs and 250,910 TEUs in July 2025. Export empties totaled 1,734,397 TEUs for January through July, up 1.2% from the 1,713,273 TEUs recorded in the same period of 2025. Import empties rose 36.5% from January through July compared to the previous year. 

The Port of New York and New Jersey moved 54,137 containers by rail in July, a 13.4% decrease from the previous year’s figure. Rail volume from January through July was 3.3% lower than in the same period of 2025.

A total of 27,597 autos moved through the Port of New York and New Jersey in July, down 5.3% from the previous year. Auto volume for January through July was 8.2% less than in the same period of 2025.
