Trade statistics shared by The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s Port Commerce Department show two records broken in August 2015.   Overall container lifts for that month hit 329,057, up 7.9 percent from August 2014. The August 2015 numbers represent a new monthly record for container lifts at the Port of New York and New Jersey. Rail lifts also had their best August ever. A new economic impact study concluded that the economic value of the Port of New York and New Jersey has grown, and this bodes well for the region. The report cites that jobs directly associated with port activity have increased by more than 13 percent since 2012. Personal and business incomes as well as federal, state, and local tax revenues associated with the port have also grown. On Wednesday, September 2, Port Authority staff hosted the Port of Tokyo’s Metropolitan Trade Mission for the purpose of renewing our sister port agreement on the 35th anniversary of its original execution. The Mission included 14 members and was led by Takashi Takeichi, Director General of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s Bureau of Port and Harbor. Trade stats released for June 2015 confirmed cargo volumes at the Port of New York and New Jersey set a record pace during the first six months of 2015. Volumes were moved 13.4 percent higher than the same period in 2014, which established the previous record. Between January and June of this year, the port handled 3,093,789 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), compared to 2,727,554 TEUs handled during the same period in 2014.
