The Port of New York and New Jersey continued its streak of record-setting months through the first quarter of 2019. In March the Port moved 585,098 TEUs (333,688 lifts) compared to 572,576 TEUs (327,096 lifts) in March of 2018. This number represents a 2.2 percent increase over the record set the previous year, and the most ever recorded for the month of March. Cashless tolling is now in place at the Outerbridge Crossing. Cash payments are no longer accepted. Trucks using the Outerbridge Crossing must pay tolls using the E-ZPass tag or Tolls by Mail. All special (permit) loads-overweight and oversized trucks-must receive a PAPD escort at the Outerbridge Crossing. Cashless tolling works by scanning the E-ZPass tag mounted on a vehicle’s windshield and then charging the toll to the passholder’s account. February numbers show record container volume continues to move through the Port of New York and New Jersey. Total volume rose to 585,216 TEUs (332,484 lifts) compared to 521,921 TEUs (298,199 lifts) in February 2018, a 12.1 percent increase that brought the year-to-February total to 1,207,747 TEUs.  Import loads (TEUs) increased in February by 7.6 percent compared to the previous year while export loads showed a slight decrease, dropping by 2.9 percent for February 2019 compared to February 2018.
