Total volume at the Port of New York and New Jersey rose by 13.4 percent in October, posting 755,437 TEUs (419,744 containers) versus 666,381 TEUs (374,805 containers) in October 2019. This increase brings our year through October total to 6,137,859 TEUs (3,452,130 containers). October imports totaled 405,415 TEUs (224,835 containers) compared to 340,952 TEUs (191,655 containers) in October 2019, an 18.9 percent increase. Continuing its recovery to 2019 volume levels, the Port of New York and New Jersey surpassed its all-time September record as factories and manufacturers around the world ramped up activity in preparation for the holiday season and growing concerns of future supply chain disruptions. The Port reported total volume of 720,969 TEUs (399,803 containers) for September 2020, which was a 15.4 percent increase from the September 2019 totals of 624,961 TEUs (352,098 containers) i. Seven months into the COVID-19 global pandemic, with closures and restrictions all around us, the Port of New York and New Jersey remains open and fully operational. Container volumes have rebounded sharply, consistent with the elimination of most “blank sailings.” In August, the Port returned to 2019 levels, setting a new all-time monthly container record, including a new record for intermodal rail volume. At almost 65,000 lifts, the port-wide intermodal ExpressRail system handled 7.8 percent more volume than August 2019, with overall rail volume up 1.4 percent year-to-date through August 2020.     Following the Golden Week celebration (October 1-8), just two blank sailings remain on Transpacific services calling on the Port of New York and New Jersey.
