Global Container Terminals Welcomes Hapag Lloyd ’s 14,000 TEU “Malik Al-Ashtar”

Global Marine Terminals (GCT) hosted the arrival of its first 14,000 TEU class ship to be operated in the east coast service (EC4) by “The Alliance” consortium of carriers. “The Alliance” is comprised of member carriers Hapag Lloyd (Germany), Yang Ming Lines (Taiwan), and the three Japanese carriers: NYK, K-Line, and MOL. The “Malik Al-Ashtar,” registered in Malta, is the first of four new ships added by Hapag Lloyd to serve the trade from South China, Taiwan, and Vietnam via the Suez Canal.  Later in the spring, K-Line will contribute another seven 14,000 TEU ships to the service. Cross Harbor Freight Program Enters Second Review Phase

On Friday, February 2nd, the Port Authority announced its award of a $23.7 million agreement to Cross Harbor Partners, a joint venture of STV Incorporated/AKRF Inc., to undertake the Tier II Environmental Impact Statement for the Cross Harbor Freight Program at the Port of New York and New Jersey. The aim of the Cross Harbor Freight Program is to reduce roadway congestion attributed to goods movement across the New York/New Jersey Harbor. Port NY & NJ Sets Cargo Volume Record for 2017

On Monday, February 05, 2018, the Port of New York and New Jersey announced that cargo volumes for 2017 had shattered the existing annual cargo volume record set in 2015 by 5.3 percent. Specifically, during 2017, the port handled 6,710,817 TEUs compared to 6,371,720 TEUs handled in 2015. The record volumes were attributed partially to completion of the Bayonne Bridge Navigational Clearance Project in June 2017.
