Total Container Volume in June Increases Nearly 50% from Previous Year

The streak of record-breaking volume continued in June at the Port of New York and New Jersey, with June’s total volume numbers nearly doubling the numbers posted in June 2020. Total volume rose by 46.6 percent in June with 749,400 TEUs (415,813 lifts) compared to 511,306 TEUs (290,454 lifts) the previous year. This record-breaking monthly number brings our year through June total to 4,395,072 TEUs (2,440,039 lifts). 

Imports and exports also posted substantial gains in June. Imports totaled 388,449 TEUs (216,099 lifts) versus 266,836 TEUs (151,922 lifts) in June 2020, a 45.6 percent increase. From January through June 2021, imports at the Port of New York and New Jersey reached 2,254,028 TEUs (1,259,463 lifts) compared to 1,718,958 TEUs (979,092 lifts) in the same period of 2020, a 31.1 percent increase. 

Exports rose by 47.6 percent in June, totaling 360,951 TEUs (199,714 lifts) versus 244,470 TEUs (138,532 lifts) in June 2020. From January through June 2021, exports at the Port of New York and New Jersey reached 2,141,044 TEUs (1,184,938 lifts), a 30 percent increase compared to the 1,646,667 TEUs (931,159 lifts) posted in the same period of 2020. 

Export empties rose by 69 percent in June, with 247,964 compared to 146,701 the previous year. From January through June, export empties totaled 1,441,793 versus 987,055 for the same period last year, a 46.1 percent increase. 

Rail and auto volume also showed strong gains in June. Rail volume rose by 17.2 percent from the previous June figure, totaling 58,446 containers for June 2021. Rail volume, January through June 2021, was 10.1 percent greater than in the same period of 2020. 

In June, a total of 39,298 autos moved through the Port of New York and New Jersey, an increase of 29.4 percent compared to June 2020.
