Strong Gains in April at the Port of NY and NJ

It continued to be a strong spring at the Port of New York and New Jersey, with rail and import volumes posting double-digit gains. The total volume for April reached 751,194 TEUs (413,896 containers), a 5.9 percent increase from the 709,469 TEUs (396,517 containers) recorded the previous year. This number brings our year-through-April total to 2,954,913 TEUs (1,627,971 containers).

The Port of New York and New Jersey imported 386,727 TEUs (214,054 containers) in April, a 10.6 percent increase from the 349,792 TEUs (196,960 containers) recorded in April 2024. From January through April, 1,504,068 TEUs (831,367 containers) were imported. This number represented a 9.1 percent increase from the 1,378,123 TEUs (766,120 containers) imported in the same period of 2024. Import empties declined 35.2 percent in the first four months of the year compared to the same period in 2024.

April exports totaled 121,770 TEUs (65,117 containers) versus 121,847 TEUs (65,387 containers) in April 2024, a 0.1 percent decrease in TEU volume. During the first four months of 2025, the Port of New York and New Jersey exported 462,777 TEUs (247,492 containers), a 3.7 percent increase from the 446,100 TEUs (238,948 containers) in the same period of 2024.

Export empties increased by 2.5 percent in April, totaling 241,289 TEUs compared to 235,500 TEUs in April 2024. From January through April, export empties reached 982,372 TEUs versus 877,903 TEUs in the same period of 2024, an increase of 11.9 percent.

The April figure for rail was 62,030 containers, an increase of 15.8 percent from the previous year’s figure. The January through April rail volume was 7.1 percent greater than in the same period of 2024.

A total of 30,124 autos moved through the Port of New York and New Jersey, a 20.9 percent decline from the previous April. Auto volume for January through April was down 13 percent from the same period of 2024.
