Rail Volumes Continue to Grow in March

The Port of New York and New Jersey continues to maintain a strong supply chain as the end of Q1 marks increasing numbers for our rail practice. Rail volume increased 1.5 percent from the previous year’s March figure, totaling 59,771 containers for March 2020.

Total volume for March 2020 was 560,830 TEUs (318,521 lifts) versus 585,098 TEUs (333,688 lifts) in March 2019, a 4.1 percent decrease. Import loads (TEUs) were also down 4.1 percent in March 2020 in comparison to March 2019, export loads (TEUs) increased 5.2 percent in March 2020 vs. March 2019.

Import loads for the month of March totaled 271,511 TEUs (154,926 lifts) versus 282,981 TEUs (161,486 lifts) in March 2019, a 4.1 percent decrease. Export loads for the month of March totaled 136,780 TEUs (75,269 lifts) versus 130,038 TEUs (72,002 lifts) in March 2019, a 5.2 percent increase in TEU volume.

Autos moved through the Port of NY & NJ totaled 42,188 in March, a decrease of 24.5 percent when compared against March 2019.
