July 2025 marked the Port of New York and New Jersey’s second-busiest July ever. The month’s total volume of 794,268 TEUs (437,248 containers) was a 1.5 percent decrease compared to the 806,015 TEUs (440,952 containers) posted in July 2024. This number brings the port’s total for January to July to 5,211,550 TEUs (2,869,901 containers), a 3.9 percent increase from the same period of 2024. The port’s strong showing maintained its status as the second-busiest U.S. port for loaded TEUs.

Imports also remained strong in July, posting a total of 420,131 TEUs (231,622 containers), a slight 0.5 percent drop from the 422,212 TEUs (231,424 containers) of July 2024. As of July, year-to-date numbers show a 2.8 percent increase in imports, with 2,653,528 TEUs (1,466,357 containers) compared to 2,580,267 TEUs (1,431,207 containers) in the same period of 2024.
Exports increased 8.8 percent in July compared to the previous year. A total of 121,999 TEUs (65,476 containers) were exported in July compared to 112,175 TEUs (60,307 containers) in July 2024. From January to July, the Port of New York and New Jersey exported 834,564 TEUs (447,206 containers), compared to 795,739 TEUs (427,095 containers) in the same period in 2024, representing a 4.9 percent increase.
Export empties decreased by 6.7 percent to 250,910 TEUs in July 2025, compared to 269,026 TEUs in July 2024. Export empties totaled 1,713,273 TEUs for January through July 2025 versus 1,625,574 TEUs in the same period of 2024, a 5.4 percent increase. Import empties also declined, falling by 32.5 percent for the period from January through July when compared to the same period in 2024.
A total of 29,131 autos moved through the Port of New York and New Jersey in July, representing a 24.1 percent decrease compared to July 2024. Auto volume for January through July 2025 was 12.1 percent less than in the same period of 2024.
It was another double-digit month in July for rail volume at the Port of New York and New Jersey. Following June’s sizable 23.3 percent increase from the previous year, July posted an 11.3 percent rise from 2024, totaling 62,906 containers. The port’s year-to-date rail volume through July is 7.5 percent higher than in the same period of 2024.
