The Port of New York and New Jersey wants to especially acknowledge the efforts of the 15,000 port drayage operators that keep the Port moving during National Truck Driver Appreciation Week.

Truck drivers bring an unprecedented amount of value to the business model of the Port; ensuring that cargo is delivered on-time and safely. “Gratitude and the utmost respect is what we have for the dedicated individuals who transport 85% of our Port’s $200 billion of cargo,” Director of the Port Department, Molly Campbell.

In recent years, the Port has realigned and increased the capacity and safety of its roadways with more improvements planned for the future. In the meantime, the terminal operators have increased efficiency through new gate systems, appointment systems, improved terminal layouts and additional equipment, all designed to optimize the experience for truckers and saving them time.

Freight tonnage in the Port of New York and New Jersey through July has jumped 6.5 percent compared with the same period a year ago.  As the industry continues to grow with technological and infrastructure advances, the demand for truckers is at an all-time high. In addition, e-commerce continues to drive the need for additional drivers with the growth of major warehouse and distribution centers in the region.
