A steady surge of cargo contributed to a strong start to 2022 at the Port of New York and New Jersey. Total volume increased by 21.5 percent in February compared to the previous year’s figure, as the seaport moved 759,248 TEUs (417,332 containers) compared to 625,120 TEUs (347,635 containers) in February 2021. Cargo volumes remained strong at the Port of New York and New Jersey as summer drew to a close. Autos led the charge with 42,370 vehicles moving through the port in August, an 11.8 percent increase compared to August 2020. Auto volume from January through August was 28.1 percent greater than in the same period of 2020.   Total volume at the Port of New York and New Jersey rose by 13.4 percent in August, posting 780,782 TEUs (433,022 lifts) compared to 688,365 TEUs (383,397 lifts) in August 2020. The streak of record-breaking volume continued in June at the Port of New York and New Jersey, with June’s total volume numbers nearly doubling the numbers posted in June 2020. Total volume rose by 46.6 percent in June with 749,400 TEUs (415,813 lifts) compared to 511,306 TEUs (290,454 lifts) the previous year. May 2021 saw another double-digit, record-breaking month at the Port of New York and New Jersey. Total volume, imports, autos, and rail posted double-digit volume increases compared to the previous year, and rail broke its all-time monthly record for May.
