For the first time in more than 13 months, cargo volume at the Port of New York and New Jersey rose at a slower pace in September. Double-digit gains continued in July at the Port of New York and New Jersey. Autos led the charge posting a stunning 79 percent increase from the previous year’s monthly figure. In July, a total of 39,690 autos moved through the Port compared to 22,178 in July 2020. July’s total volume of 758,810 TEUs (420,847 containers) represented a 25.9 percent increase versus the 607,463 TEUs (342,124 containers) recorded in July 2020. Activity at the Port of New York and New Jersey showed resilience in consumer demand and the global supply chain as cargo volume set a new all-time monthly record in March. Volume increased by 35 percent in March 2021 compared to March 2019, breaking the monthly record set in October of 2020. Compared to 2020, March volume rose by even greater gains. After starting the year with the highest January on record for volume, the Port of New York and New Jersey continued the record-breaking trend into February with a 7.9 percent increase in overall cargo activity over February 2020.
