May 2022 was a historic month at the Port of New York and New Jersey as it became the second busiest month of cargo activity in our history. Total volume increased by 6.1 percent in May, totaling 845,305 TEUs (468,098 containers) compared to 796,693 TEUs (442,544 containers) in May 2021. A steady surge of cargo contributed to a strong start to 2022 at the Port of New York and New Jersey. Total volume increased by 21.5 percent in February compared to the previous year’s figure, as the seaport moved 759,248 TEUs (417,332 containers) compared to 625,120 TEUs (347,635 containers) in February 2021. The 16-month surge of cargo volume at the Port of New York and New Jersey reached an all-time high in October. A record-breaking 796,704 TEUs (440,514 lifts) were recorded in October, a 5.5 percent increase over the 755,437 TEUs (419,744 lifts) posted in October 2020. Since May, holiday items have been arriving at the Port of New York and New Jersey in anticipation of the December shopping season. Popular items such as furniture, home goods, kitchenware, computers, televisions, electronics, and alcohol passed efficiently through the port. For the first time in more than 13 months, cargo volume at the Port of New York and New Jersey rose at a slower pace in September.
