The Port of New York and New Jersey welcomed one of the world’s most advanced, High-Efficient Ro-Ro (HERO) ships, the M/V Titus, on Tuesday, July 31, when it completed its maiden voyage from Asia to Port Newark’s Berth 13. The new M/V Titus can handle a wider range of cargo types with increased capacity and optimized fuel efficiency, reducing its energy consumption and emissions. The Port of New York and New Jersey achieved a monthly record for June.  Total volume for June 2018 was 625,366 TEUs (357,382 lifts) versus 584,606 TEUs (335,702 lifts) in June 2017, a 7.0% increase.  Import loads (TEUs) were up by 5.2% in June 2018 vs. June 2017 and export loads (TEUs) increased 6.0% in June 2018 vs. June 2017. Export empties increased 11% totaling 183,809 TEUs in June 2018 versus 165,585 TEUs in June 2017. On Friday, July 20, 2018, the M/V One Stork, a 14,026 TEU Ultra Large Container Ship (ULCS), docked at Global Container Terminal in Bayonne, New Jersey on its maiden voyage. Built at the Kure shipyard in Japan and launched June 12, the Japanese flagged vessel called ports in China and Southeast Asia, and then sailed to the Port of New York and New Jersey via the Suez Canal. Total volume for May 2018 was 593,625 TEUs (340,890 lifts) versus 565,052 TEUs (325,373 lifts) in May 2017, yielding a 5.1% increase. Import loads (TEUs) were up by 6.6% in May 2018 vs. May 2017 and export loads (TEUs) increased 9.3% in May 2018 vs. May 2017. On June 8th the Port of New York and New Jersey recognized the one-year anniversary of the raising of the Bayonne Bridge. The bridge now yields a navigational clearance of 215 feet resulting in the passage of larger ships, record cargo volume and economic growth for the Port. A year after completion, 107 vessels in excess of 9,500 TEUs (20-foot-long cargo containers, the shipping industry’s standardized measurement) have called on port terminals in Newark, Elizabeth and Bayonne, N.J. and in Staten Island.
