Port of NY and NJ is the Second-Busiest U.S. Port for Loaded Containers in the First Half of 2025

The Port of New York and New Jersey continued to see strong growth over the first half of the year despite broad global uncertainty across the supply chain. The port handled 4,417,282 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) during the first six months of the year. The total was a 4.9 percent increase over the same period of 2024 and a jump of 20.9 percent over pre-pandemic 2019. The port finished both the month of June and the full first half of the year as the second-busiest in the country for loaded containers, handling 467,335 loaded TEUs in June and 2,945,962 loaded TEUs for the first half of the year.

Rail volume saw a double-digit increase, as a total of 64,701 containers moved by rail in June, a 23.3 percent jump from the same month in the previous year. Rail volume from January to June 2025 was 12.3 percent higher than in the same period in 2024.

Total volume, including both loaded and empty containers, remained stable in June as 687,671 TEUs (378,806 containers) moved through the Port of New York and New Jersey, a 3 percent decrease from the 708,977 TEUs (395,261 containers) posted the previous year. This number brings the port’s year-to-date total to 4,417,282 TEUs (2,432,653 containers).

Imports in June totaled 347,112 TEUs (192,377 containers), down 5.2 percent from the 366,099 TEUs (203,555 containers) recorded in June 2024. From January through June, imports at the Port of New York and New Jersey reached 2,233,397 TEUs (1,234,735 containers), representing a 3.5 percent increase over the 2,158,055 TEUs (1,199,783 containers) posted during the same period in 2024. Import empties decreased by 28.3 percent from January to June compared to the same period in the previous year.

Exports increased by 6.7 percent in June compared to the previous year, reaching a total of 120,223 TEUs (64,688 containers) versus 112,663 TEUs (60,569 containers) in June 2024. From January through June, exports at the Port of New York and New Jersey reached 712,565 TEUs (381,730 containers), a 4.2 percent increase from the 683,564 TEUs (366,788 containers) recorded during the same period in 2024. Export empties decreased by 4.3 percent to 218,791 TEUs in June, compared to 228,575 TEUs in June 2024. A total of 1,462,363 export empties moved through the port from January through June, compared to 1,356,548 TEUs in the same period in 2024, representing an increase of 7.8 percent.

 A total of 30,937 autos moved through the Port of New York and New Jersey in June, representing an 8.9 percent decrease compared to the previous year. January through June’s auto volume was 10.1 percent less than in the same period of 2024.
