Total Volume Drops in June at the Port of NY & NJ Due to the Effects of COVID-19

The worldwide pandemic impacted June’s total volume numbers at the Port of New York and New Jersey. In June, the Port had 511,306 TEUs (290,454 lifts) compared to 611,027 TEUs (347,294 lifts) in June 2019, a 16.3 percent decrease in total volume. This number brings our year through June total to 3,365,625 TEUs (1,907,062 lifts), a 7.9 percent decrease from the previous year.

Imports for June totaled 266,836 TEUs (151,581 lifts) versus 303,309 TEUs (172,502 lifts) in June 2019, a 12 percent decrease. From January through June 2020, imports at the Port of New York and New Jersey reached 1,718,958 TEUs (970,226 lifts), a 7.3 percent decrease from the same period in 2019, which had 1,853,771 TEUs (1,051,357 lifts).

Exports for June totaled 244,470 TEUs (138,532 lifts) versus 307,718 TEUs (174,448 lifts) in June 2019, a 20.6 percent decrease in TEU volume. From January through June 2020, the Port of New York and New Jersey reached 1,646,667 TEUs (931,159 lifts) versus 1,799,070 TEUs (1,023,364 lifts) during the same period of 2019, an 8.5 percent decrease.

Rail volume decreased 6.0 percent from the previous year’s June figure, totaling 49,866 containers for June 2020. From January through June 2020, rail volume remained 1.4 percent greater than in the same period of 2019.

Autos moved through the Port of New York and New Jersey totaled 30,377 in June, a 44.2 percent decrease compared to June 2019.
