Metropolitan Rail Freight Council Releases Action Plan to Increase Rail Freight Capacity in NYC Metro Area

The Metropolitan Rail Freight Council (MRFC), a coalition of public and private organizations dedicated to promoting greater rail freight use in the New York-New Jersey metropolitan region, has released its first Action Plan. January Shatters More Records at Port of NY & NJ

Cargo volumes at the Port of New York and New Jersey beat several records in January 2017. Container volumes hit a new monthly high with a total of 296,432 lifts or 517,668 TEUs for an increase of 8.3 percent over totals logged in January 2016. Loaded import containers hit 149,757 lifts for an increase of 5.5 percent over January 2016. Loaded export containers hit 61,740 lifts for an increase of 8 percent over January 2016. February Posts Container, Rail, and Auto Growth at Port NY & NJ

Container lifts for February 2016 were 12.4 percent better than those logged in February 2015 according to statistics recently released by the Port of New York and New Jersey. The 287,197 lifts executed in February 2016 also represent a new monthly record for the port. Loaded import containers totaled 148,048 units for a 7.4 percent increase over totals for February 2015. Loaded export containers totaled 61,278 units for an increase of 6.6 percent, while export empty containers totaled 76,037 units, representing an increase of 27.8 percent compared to February 2015.
