September TEU Numbers Up From Last Year’s Mark

Overview

The Port of New York and New Jersey hit a monthly record in September. Total volume for September 2018 was 603,034 TEUs (341,676 lifts) versus 573,458 TEUs (327,045 lifts) in September 2017, a 5.2% increase. Import loads (TEUs) were up by 5.7% in September 2018 vs. September 2017 and export loads (TEUs) increased 2.6% in September 2018 vs. September 2017. Export empties increased 6.1% totaling 180,880 TEUs in September 2018 versus 170,414 TEUs in September 2017.

Imports

Import loads for the month of September totaled 304,125 TEUs (172,737 lifts) versus 287,753 TEUs (163,648 lifts) in September 2017, a 5.7% increase. For period January thru September 2018, the Port of New York and New Jersey imported loads reached 2,717,353 TEUs (1,550,944 lifts) versus 2,531,304 TEUs (1,451,713 lifts) in same period of 2017, a 7.3% increase. Import empties are down 20.6% in January thru September 2018 versus the same period in 2017.

Exports

Export loads for the month of September totaled 116,711 TEUs (64,746 lifts) versus 113,739 TEUs (63,169 lifts) in September 2017, a 2.6% increase in TEU volume. For period January thru September 2018, the Port of New York and New Jersey exported loads reached 1,114,656 TEUs (618,399 lifts) versus 1,044,266 TEUs (581,204 lifts) in same period of 2017, a 6.7% increase. Export empties totaled 1,483,452 TEUs for January thru September 2018 versus 1,420,358 TEUs in the same period of 2017, an increase of 4.4%.

Rail & Auto

Rail volume, 55,991 containers in September 2018, increased 20.4% from the previous year’s September figure. This is the seventh consecutive month of rail volume above 50,000 containers. Rail volume, January through September 2018 at 483,000 containers, is 14.8% greater than in the same period of 2017. Autos moved through the Port of New York and New Jersey totaled 38,779 in September 2018, a decrease of 15.4% when compared against September 2017. Auto volume for January thru September 2018 is 1.5% greater than in the same period of 2017.
