Rail Volume Reaches Monumental Mark

The Port of New York New Jersey hit another monthly record in April 2018. Total volume for the month of April was 551,117 TEUs. Although import loads were down by 2.1% in April 2018 vs. April 2017, most likely due to a late Chinese New Year, export loads increased 12.9% in April 2018 vs. April 2017. This is the third month in a row that export loads have increased by double digits when compared against 2017. Export empties totaled 142,664 TEUs in April 2018 versus 146,242 TEUs in April 2017 (-2.4%).

Our rail volume also hit another monthly record with 51,777 containers in April. This is a 10.1% increase from April 2017. For the first time, Port of NY & NJ has recorded two consecutive months (March and April) of rail volume above 50,000 containers. Rail volume, January through April 2018, is 15.7% greater than in the same period of 2017.

There were 46,214 autos that moved through the Port of NY & NJ in April, 0.3% greater than in April of 2017. Auto volume, January through April 2018, is 3.1% greater than in the same period of 2017.
