Rail Cargo as a Share of Overall Cargo Continues to Grow in April

For the month of April, the Port of New York and New Jersey’s rail business continues to demonstrate growth as the total rail volume, January through April, is 6.0 percent greater than in the same period in 2019. From a month to month comparison however, rail volume decreased 0.8 percent from 56,911 last  April, to 56,479 containers for April 2020. 

Total volume for April was 559,929 TEUs (318,389 lifts) versus 605,263 TEUs (344,862 lifts) in April 2019, a 7.5 percent decrease. This brings our year through April total to 2,316,907 TEUs (1,312,476 lifts).

Imports for the month of April totaled 285,363 TEUs (163,038 lifts) versus 299,375 TEUs (170,621 lifts) in April 2019, a 4.7 percent decrease. For the period January through April 2020, the Port of NY and NJ imports reached 1,185,114 TEUs (668,987 lifts) versus 1,208,519 TEUs (686,189 lifts) in the same period of 2019, a 1.9 percent decrease.

Exports for the month of April totaled 274,566 TEUs (155,780 lifts) versus 305,888 TEUs (173,720 lifts) in April 2019, a 10.2 percent decrease in TEU volume. For the period January through April 2020, the Port of NY and NJ exports reached 1,131,793 TEUs (640,349 lifts) versus 1,189,589 TEUs (677,062 lifts) in the same period of 2019, a 4.9 percent decrease.

Autos moved through the port totaled 32,901 in April, a decrease of 35.3 percent when compared against April 2019. Auto volume for January through April 2020 is 24.6 percent less than in the same period of 2019.
