Port of NY and NJ Produces Historic Month for Cargo Volumes in October

This year has been one of the best on record for the Port of New York and New Jersey. October set a new all-time record with 658,708 TEUs (374,275 lifts), an increase of 11.9% from October 2017 which had 588,848 TEUs (334,324 lifts). Import loads (TEUs) were up by 11.1% in October 2018 compared to the previous year and export loads (TEUs) increased by 7.9% in October 2018 compared to October 2017. Export empties showed a significant increase in October, rising 16.7% for a total of 187,027 TEUs versus 160,288 TEUs in October 2017.

Imports
Import loads for October totaled 339,602 TEUs (193,008 lifts) compared to 305,729 TEUs (174,298 lifts) in October 2017, an 11.1% increase. For the period of January through October 2018, import loads for the Port of New York and New Jersey reached 3,056,951 TEUs (1,743,952 lifts) compared to 2,837,033 TEUs (1,626,011 lifts) in same period of 2017, a 7.8% increase. Import empties were down 20.6% in January through October 2018 versus the same period in 2017.

Exports
Export loads for the month of October totaled 130,782 TEUs (72,144 lifts) versus 121,203 TEUs (67,317 lifts) in October 2017, a 7.9% increase in TEU volume. For the period of January through October 2018, the Port exported loads reached 1,245,438 TEUs (690,543 lifts) versus 1,165,469 TEUs (648,521 lifts) in the same period of 2017, a 6.9% increase. Export empties totaled 1,670,479 TEUs for January through October 2018 compared to 1,580,646 TEUs in the same period of 2017, an increase of 5.7%.

Rail and Auto
October 2018 marked the eighth consecutive month of rail volume above 50,000 containers. Rail volume increased 11.7% from the previous year’s October figure, totaling 57,197 containers for October 2018. Rail volume for January through October 2018 rose by 14.5% when compared to the same period of 2017.

Autos moved through the Port of New York and New Jersey totaled 50,186 in October, a decrease of 1.9% from October 2017. Auto volume for January through October 2018 showed a slight increase, rising by 1.2% when compared to the same period of 2017.
