A steady surge of cargo contributed to a strong start to 2022 at the Port of New York and New Jersey. Total volume increased by 21.5 percent in February compared to the previous year’s figure, as the seaport moved 759,248 TEUs (417,332 containers) compared to 625,120 TEUs (347,635 containers) in February 2021. The increase brought the total for the year through February to 1,524,298 TEUs (839,293 containers).
Imports rose by 15.4 percent in February, totaling 385,539 TEUs (212,038 containers) versus 334,176 TEUs (186,167 containers) in February 2021. For the first two months of 2022, imported loads at the Port of New York and New Jersey reached 783,754 TEUs (431,768 containers), an 11.1 percent increase over the 705,568 TEUs (392,765 containers) posted during the same period of 2021.
Exports also posted strong gains in February, increasing by 9.6 percent from the previous year. Export loads for February totaled 103,782 TEUs (56,022 containers) versus 94,698 TEUs (51,872 containers) in February 2021. From January through February 2022, exported loads reached 204,445 TEUs (110,403 containers), a slight increase of 0.5 percent over last year’s 203,436 TEUs (111,292 containers) accrued in the same period.
In February, export empties increased by 38.8 percent, totaling 269,253 TEUs compared to 193,956 TEUs in February 2021. For the first two months of the year, export empties increased by 23.1 percent, posting 533,728 TEUs. That was up from last year’s total of 433,465 TEUs recorded during the same period. Import empties fell by 39.7 percent from January through February 2022 compared to the previous year.
Rail volume increased in February at the Port of New York and New Jersey from the previous year’s February figure. A total of 53,977 containers moved through the port in February 2022, a 9 percent increase from 2021. From January through February 2022, rail volume decreased by 10.6 percent compared to 2021.
Autos moved through the Port of New York and New Jersey totaled 24,268 in February, a decrease of 41.6 percent compared to February 2021. Auto volume for January through February 2022 was 31.3 percent less than in the same period of 2021.
