The Port of New York and New Jersey hit record volumes in both rail cargo and overall container throughput for November. Total volume for November 2019 reached 599,626 TEUs (338,857 lifts), a 2.7 percent increase over the 583,880 TEUs (331,242 lifts) posted the previous year. The increase brings the yearly total to 6,886,388 TEUs. Imports (TEUs) totaled 302,460 TEUs (171,273 lifts) in November, a 0.5 percent decrease over the 303,881 TEUs (172,839 lifts) posted in November 2018. On November 30th, the Neopanamax container ship Theseus arrived at the Port’s largest facility, Maher Terminals. Port department staff were on hand to welcome Captain Tsipouras Dimitrios and his crew, presenting the captain with a plaque to celebrate the ship’s inaugural visit. Theseus joins the Triton, which made its first visit to the Port earlier this year, as one of the largest vessels to enter the Port of New York and New Jersey. The Port of New York and New Jersey set a new record in October 2019, handling 666,381 TEUs (20-foot equivalent units), a 1.2 percent increase over the previous October record of 658,708 TEUs set in 2018. The October 2019 numbers also represent the third largest cargo volume handled in any month in the history of the port.  The Port Authority’s ExpressRail system also set an October record, handling 57,722 containers, an increase of about 1 percent over the 57,197 containers handled during the previous October record month in 2018. Completed in June of 2019, ExpressRail Port Jersey, operated by GCT Bayonne, is the fourth and final piece in The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s $600 million ExpressRail intermodal network. The system also includes facilities in Elizabeth, Newark and Staten Island. Total volume for September 2019 was 624,961 TEUs (352,098 lifts) versus 603,034 TEUs (341,676 lifts) in September 2018, a 3.6 percent increase.
