The tumultuous changes in cargo volume from the COVID-19 pandemic ended with a flourish as the Port of New York and New Jersey recovered their first-half losses to end 2020 with a new container record of 7,585,819 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs), an increase of 1.5 percent from 2019. The pandemic led to vessel-call cancellations, sharp declines in factory production, and restrictions on nonessential business worldwide during the spring and summer of 2020. Despite a challenging spring and summer and the most unusual of years, the Port of New York and New Jersey finished 2020 strong with double-digit cargo volume percentage growth in December.  Total volume for December 2020 was 709,075 TEUs (394,889 lifts) versus 584,743 TEUs (330,856 lifts) in December 2019, a 21.3 percent increase. Cargo volume at the Port of New York and New Jersey continued to rise for the 4th month in a row, with total volume for November 2020 at 738,885 TEUs (408,482 containers), up 23.2 percent compared to the same month in 2019 when the seaport handled 599,626 TEUs (338,857 containers).
