The Port of New York and New Jersey welcomed the Statue of Liberty’s “little sister” on June 30 at the Elizabeth-Port Authority Marine Terminal. The 1,000-pound, nine-foot-tall statue is a replica made from the same plaster mold as the 1878 original by Auguste Bartholdi. She was removed from her base at the Musée des Arts et Métiers in Paris on June 23 and packed in a specially designed case with plexiglass walls designed for transporting sculptures. The Port of New York and New Jersey had another strong month in April, posting double-digit increases for total container volume, container imports, and autos and setting a new April record for rail volume. Total volume in April was 712,799 TEUs (396,168 lifts) versus 559,929 TEUs (318,389 lifts) in April 2020, a 27.3 percent increase and record for the month of April.. Activity at the Port of New York and New Jersey showed resilience in consumer demand and the global supply chain as cargo volume set a new all-time monthly record in March. Volume increased by 35 percent in March 2021 compared to March 2019, breaking the monthly record set in October of 2020. Compared to 2020, March volume rose by even greater gains. The Port moved 789,776 TEUs (437,479 lifts) in March 2021 versus 560,830 TEUs (318,521 lifts) in March 2020, an increase of 40.8 percent. May 1, 2021, marked another milestone for the Port of New York and New Jersey as the seaport welcomed the MSC Virgo to Port Newark Container Terminal (PNCT).  Staff from the Port of New York and New Jersey presented the ship’s captain and crew with a commemorative plaque during a ceremony marking its arrival as the largest container ship to call at the terminal.  Built in 2020, the 15,000-TEU capacity MSC Virgo is deployed on MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company’s INDUSA service that was introduced in September 2020 to reinforce its service offering on the Indian subcontinent.
