Activity at the Port of New York and New Jersey showed resilience in consumer demand and the global supply chain as cargo volume set a new all-time monthly record in March. Volume increased by 35 percent in March 2021 compared to March 2019, breaking the monthly record set in October of 2020. Compared to 2020, March volume rose by even greater gains. After starting the year with the highest January on record for volume, the Port of New York and New Jersey continued the record-breaking trend into February with a 7.9 percent increase in overall cargo activity over February 2020. Total volume for February was 625,120 TEUs (347,635 lifts) versus 579,124 TEUs (326,370 lifts) in February 2020, which represents the highest total volume for any February at the Port of New York and New Jersey. After ending 2020 with record-breaking volumes at the Port of New York and New Jersey, the trend continued in the new year with January 2021 as the seaport experienced double-digit growth in cargo activity and the highest January on record for volume. In January, the seaport moved 721,284 TEUs (400,400 lifts) compared to 617,024 TEUs (349,196 rail lifts) in January 2020, a 16.9 percent increase.  Rail volume increased 12.2 percent from the previous year’s monthly figure, totaling 68,880 containers for January 2021. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy announced earlier in February that the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, several Port of New York of New Jersey tenants, and other agencies and organizations across the state would receive more than $100 million for clean, equitable transportation projects.
