June Brings Double-Digit Gains at The Port Of New York And New Jersey

It was a month of double-digit gains in June at the Port of New York and New Jersey. Total volume rose by 13.5 percent, with 708,935 TEUs (395,219 containers) moving through the port compared to the 624,512 TEUs (346,850 containers) recorded in June 2023. This increase brings our year-through June total to 4,210,611 TEUs (2,336,088 containers).  June was the port’s fourth consecutive month surpassing 700,000 TEUs, as well as its seventh consecutive month of year-over-year growth. The port maintained its status as the second busiest in the nation for loaded cargo over the first half of the year.

Imports were up 12.1 percent in June versus the previous year, totaling 366,099 TEUs (203,555 containers) and 326,681 TEUs (181,496 containers). From January through June 2024, imported loads at the Port of New York and New Jersey reached 2,158,055 TEUs (1,199,783 containers), a 13.7 percent increase when compared to the 1,897,496 TEUs (1,056,540 containers) recorded in the same period of 2023. 

June exports totaled 112,621 TEUs (60,527 containers), a 10.9 percent gain from the previous year’s 101,509 TEUs (54,792 containers). Exported loads from January through June 2024 reached 683,522 TEUs (366,746 containers), a 4.9 percent increase from the 651,332 TEUs (352,444 containers) recorded in the same period of 2023.

Export empties increased 17.7 percent, totaling 228,575 TEUs in June compared to 194,154 TEUs the previous year. Export empties reached 1,356,548 TEUs for January through June 2024, a 14.8 percent rise from the 1,181,629 TEUs posted in 2023. Import empties increased 26.3 percent from January through June compared to the previous year.

 A total of 52,474 containers were moved by rail in June at the Port of New York and New Jersey. While rail volume saw a slight decrease of 1.6 percent from the previous year’s June figure, volume from January through June was 4.8 percent greater than in the first half of 2023.

June saw a significant (10.2 percent) increase in auto imports from the previous year, with 33,953 autos moving through the port. Auto volume for January through June was 10.9 percent higher than in the same period of 2023.
