The Port of New York and New Jersey (PONYNJ) recorded another monthly record in July. Total volume for July 2018 was 622,559 TEUs (354,101 lifts) versus 576,947 TEUs (330,716 lifts) in July 2017, a 7.9% increase. Import loads (TEUs) were up by 10.4% in July 2018 vs. July 2017 and export loads (TEUs) increased 3.3% in July 2018 vs. July 2017. Export empties increased 6.8% totaling 182,567 TEUs in July 2018 versus 171,020 TEUs in July 2017. July 2018 was the third best monthly volume in the port’s history— first and second best months were August 2017 and June 2018, respectively.
Import loads for the month of July totaled 322,093 TEUs (183,099 lifts) versus 291,760 TEUs (167,229 lifts) in July 2017, a 10.4% increase. For period January thru July 2018, the PONYNJ imported loads reached 2,079,661 TEUs (1,188,826 lifts) versus 1,922,703 TEUs (1,104,599 lifts) in same period of 2017, an 8.2% increase. Import empties are down 23.6% in January through July 2018 versus the same period in 2017.
Export loads for the month of July totaled 116,441 TEUs (64,786 lifts) versus 112,694 TEUs (62,557 lifts) in July 2017, a 3.3% increase. For period January thru July 2018, the PONYNJ exported loads reached 872,830 TEUs (483,920 lifts) versus 805,215 TEUs (448,711 lifts) in same period of 2017, a 8.4% increase. Export empties are up 4.2% in January through July 2018 versus the same period in 2017.
Rail volume increased 10.5% from the previous year’s July figure, totaling 54,254 containers for July 2018. This is the fifth consecutive month of rail volume above 50,000 containers. Rail volume, January through July 2018, is 14.3% greater than in the same period of 2017. Autos moved through the PONYNJ totaled 43,938 in July, a decrease of 15.9% when compared against July 2017. Auto volume for January thru July 2018 is 2.6% greater than in the same period of 2017.
