Auto Imports Surge, Total Volume Tops 700K in April

In April, the Port of New York and New Jersey kept its robust pace for the year so far, moving a total of 709,469 TEUs (396,517 containers), a 9.4 percent increase compared to the same period last year. The port’s year-to-April cargo volumes totaled 2,710,918 TEUs (1,501,276 containers).  

Imports (TEUs) were also strong in April, totaling 349,792 TEUs (196,960 containers) compared to 320,948 TEUs (179,138 containers) in April 2023, a 9 percent increase. From January through April, imports at the Port of New York and New Jersey rose by 13 percent, reaching 1,378,123 TEUs (766,120 containers). Imports were 1,219,385 TEUs (679,336 containers) in the same period of 2023.  

Exports (TEUs) increased by 10.5 percent in April 2024 compared to the previous year, totaling 121,847 TEUs (65,387 containers) and 110,243 TEUs (59,687 containers) in April 2023. From January through April, the Port of New York and New Jersey exported 446,100 TEUs (238,948 containers), a 1.6 percent increase from the 439,128 TEUs (237,680 containers) recorded in the same period of 2023. 

Export empties totaled 235,500 TEUs in April, a 9.6 percent increase from the 214,938 TEUs recorded the previous April. From January through April, export empties rose by 13.4 percent, totaling 877,903 TEUs in 2024 from 774,480 TEUs in 2023. Import empties rose 34.7 percent from January through April 2024 versus the same period in 2023. 

April’s rail volume increased by 3.8 percent from the previous year’s figure, totaling 53,547 containers. Rail volume from January through April was 6.8 percent greater than in the same period of 2023. 

In April, 38,104 autos moved through the Port of New York and New Jersey, an increase of 23.4 percent compared to April 2023. Our year-to-April auto volume was 12.3 percent greater than in the same period of 2023.
