On September 28, the Council on Port Performance (CPP) voted to create a Workforce Development Implementation Team (WDIT). As part of the Transportation, Logistics, and Distribution (TLD) industry, the CPP acknowledges that a workforce talent shortage could continue to get worse over time. August container volumes at the Port of New York and New Jersey reached 335,537 lifts (585,327 TEUs). This represents an increase of 2.0 percent over August 2015, the highest August on record, and the second highest month the port has ever logged. August volumes historically average 288,000 total lifts. But August 2016 saw 174,419 import containers loaded, an increase of 6.6 percent over the same category in August 2015. On Thursday, September 15, the first of approximately 100 containers of waste paper were loaded on a barge at the Red Hook Container Terminal (RHCT), Brooklyn. Later that day, the 300-foot-long, tug-pulled barge made the trip across the Upper Bay, through the Kill Van Kull, and up Newark Bay to Port Newark Container Terminal (PNCT) in 90 minutes.
