The Port of New York and New Jersey achieved an all-time monthly record in August. Monthly total volume for August 2019 was 679,585 TEUs (385,288 lifts), a 4.3 percent increase over August 2018, which posted 651,752 TEUs (371,710 lifts). The record-breaking August numbers brought the total volume for the year to 4,995,420 TEUs.
Import loads (TEUs) rose by 2.7 percent in August 2019 versus the previous year, totaling 342,541 TEUs (193,116 lifts) versus 333,567 TEUs (189,383 lifts) in August 2018. For the period of January through August 2019, imported loads at the Port of New York and New Jersey reached 2,525,575 TEUs (1,434,532 lifts), a 4.7 percent increase over the same period of 2018, which posted 2,413,228 TEUs (1,378,207 lifts).
Export loads (TEUs) increased by 1.7 percent in August 2019 compared to August 2018. Export loads for August totaled 127,237 TEUs (70,605 lifts) versus 125,115 TEUs (69,733 lifts) in August 2018, a 1.7 percent increase in TEU volume. From January through August 2019, exported loads at the Port of New York and New Jersey decreased by 1.1 percent, reaching 986,770 TEUs (546,219 lifts) versus 997,945 TEUs (553,653 lifts) for the same period of 2018.
Export empties increased by 8.5 percent in August, totaling 207,875 TEUs versus 191,521 TEUs for August 2018. Export empties totaled 1,471,678 TEUs for January through August 2019 versus 1,302,572 TEUs in the same period of 2018, a 13 percent increase.
Rail volume at the Port of New York and New Jersey rose by 4.3 percent from the previous year’s August figure, totaling 60,212 containers for August 2019. Year to date rail volume also rose by 4.3 percent compared to the same period of 2018.
Autos moved through the Port of New York and New Jersey totaled 52,764 in August, a decrease of 8.3 percent compared to August 2018. Total auto volume for January through August 2019 posted a 3.7 percent gain compared to the same period of 2018.
